There's plenty to keep the kids occupied, you may even join in on some of the fun yourself!
There is a range of activities and camps available to keep the whole family busy whilst visiting the beautiful Gloucester and Barrington areas and when staying at the Steps Barrington.
On the flat grassy riverflats there’s plenty of space to kick a ball or throw a frisbee without hitting your neighbour’s tent. Be sure to pack your mountain bikes as there are plenty of handy bike trails great for all skill levels, including our purpose-built mountain bike park. Take a bush walk along the river bank and you’ll encounter birds, wallabies, wallaroos and lizards. Fun water activities include swimming, floating, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. And don’t forget your favourite li-lo to just float around in the sunshine! there is also the option to keep the teenagers busy during the school holidays with our Eco camps or a Duke of Ed Gold Residential Project.

DoE Gold Residential Project
The Gold Residential Project is part of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. Gold DoE participants undertake a purposeful experience with people who are not their usual companions, working towards a common goal outside of their comfort zone. We offer a 5 day residential project during the school holidays based at The Steps Barrington. Participants focus on river bank restoration guided by experienced instructors. Each morning participants work on their restoration project and each afternoon they are rewarded for their hard work with fun activities. For more information click on the DoE Gold Residential Project heading above. Eco Camps Our Eco Camp offers a journey with a purpose and a place for personal growth for young people aged 14-17 years. Run alongside the DoE Gold Residential Project during the school holidays, participants experience 5 days camping at The Steps Barrington and various activities within the Barrington area. The camp focuses on river bank restoration guided by a experienced instructors. Each morning participants work on the restoration project and each afternoon they are rewarded for their hard work with fun activities. For more information click on the Eco Camps heading above. White Water Activities White water paddling is what this river is famous for! Bring your canoes, kayaks or floaties and enjoy the fun of the rapids. Surf mats are available for purchase from our office. Mountain Biking The Steps Mountain Bike Park offers fun and challenges for all skills levels of riders. It includes a cross country loop which rewards riders with flowing downhill sections, technical climbs and log bridges set amidst a scenic riverside location on the Barrington River. Additional features of the bike park include a Pump Track for a full-body biking workout plus The Playground, a dedicated mountain biking obstacle course with options to suit specific skill levels of riders. Bushwalks/Hikes/Treks in nearby National Parks The Steps is conveniently located to some challenging but enjoyable walks in the nearby national parks. Please visit the national parks website for further information on these walks. The distance of some popular spots from The Steps are: To Copeland Tops - 23km (30mins drive) for Hidden Treasure Track (walk 4.5km/2hrs return); plus Basin Loop Track (walk 7km/4hrs return) To Gloucester Tops - 46km (1.5hrs drive) for Gloucester Tops Circuit (walk 8km/3-5hrs) To Polblue in Barrington Tops - 75km (1.5rs drive) for Barrington Trail (walk 16.5km/5hrs one way); plus Careys Peak Trail (walk7km/2hrs one way) plus other connecting walks: Edwards Swamp Trail (walk 7km/2hrs one way) & Aeroplane Hill Track (walk 5.5km/1.5hr one way) Please note that Gloucester Tops and Barrington Tops are currently inaccessible due to road closures. Expected to re-open June 2022. With all that walking, we hope you find some time to relax & listen to the Barrington River from your campsite or from the deck of the cottage! |
